Can somebody provide some guidance?
My husband and I have two Chase cards that went to charge off a few weeks ago. 19k and 14k. We had great credit (and a lot of it) and rolled all debt on to these two cards for low interest a few years ago. We have had employment issues and fallen behind. Chase said it is now in the hands of United Collections Bureau. I asked if we had to work with UCB, or could we come to a settlement with Chase (we were in the process, Chase said call back after we had details of mortage loan modification- by then it was too late and cards were charged off). It is past 180 days, so Chase rep said only possibility was to work with a non-profit and see if they would send a request letter for Chase to reclaim the loan. Ever hear of that happening?
That phone call was Wednesday.
On Thursday UCB called my parents asking to speak to deceased grandmother. When told she was deceased they asked for me and said that dead grandma has signed on a loan and they were looking for me to collect. Gave my mom a name and account number and phone number. She called worried that I was in a phishing scheme. Grandma had no part of my Chase card ever. I have read a lot of negative things about UCBs practices.
Letters arrive from UCB Monday asking for full payment sent to them, made payable to Chase.
I am planning on sending validation request letters, but it's a new charge off and the debt is ours. Isn't it very likely they have all the validation? What then? Do I send a letter requesting a settlement? We have no reserves at all to pay settlements at this point. Just trying to stay in our home for now.
