Can you demand the collection agency to validate a debt that’s 4yrs old? I’ve received letters in the past and ignored; now I want them to validate the debt. Do I still have that right?

You can request a debt validation from any collection agency. In fact, they are required under law to validate your debt.

You want to be sure they own the debt before you pay them money. You cannot request a debt validation from the original creditor.

Should the collection agency refuse to validate, then you can send them a cease and desist letter and also contact the credit reporting agencies advising that they refused to validate and request that the item be removed from your credit report. Be sure to send any request for validation certified mail, RRR. so you can have proof.
