So, I decided to look at my free credit report and found out my old gym membership I thought I cancelled is on my credit report...
Balance:
$86
Date Updated:
03/2011
Original Balance:
$86
Original Creditor:
RETRO FITNESS JACKSON
Past Due:
>$86<
Pay Status:
>Collection Account<
Account Type:
Open Account
Responsibility:
Individual Account
Loan Type: Collection Agency Attorney
Remark:
>Placed for collection<
Date placed for collection: [ 04/2010]
Estimated date that this item will be removed: 03/2017

So I am a broke college student and right now even 86 dollars is a lot for me.. so my question is since it is such a small debt what are the chances this will just blow over and I wont have to worry about the collection agency?

Yes, the debt amount is not huge. However, I feel that it is better to repay the debt. The collection agency can be persuasive. Don't assume that they will let you live in peace just because the debt amount is less. They can make repeated calls to you for the repayment of the debt. So, I would suggest you to borrow the money from your friends and family and repay the debt (if it is validated).

You can make payment arrangements with the collection agency. You need to get this paid eventually because it may stop you from getting a car loan, mortgage in the future. In 1991 I had a refinanceing held up because of a $44.00 Fingerhut balance. I had returned the item but it was never noted. I had to Fed ex them a check and then get a paid statement before the refinance would go through.

So figure out how to get this paid even if you send them $10 a month.

I would send a DV seeing there are a lot of issues of people having gym memberships show up on credit reports for no reasons, its all over this blog also. I would make sure its even owed first. Why should someone have to pay something when they are not liable for it? I would DV first and make sure its legit, if they cant produce the documents necessary then its removed from the credit report.
