verification is received, what's next?

I just received verification letter from a lawyer, debt collector including a letter from original creditor(OC).
In a letter by OC, he is requesting $300 instead of $520 as requested in original validation letter within 10 days and threatening to add 18% interest if I don't pay him $300 in within 10 days. Is it legal to request to pay in 10 days? I thought I have 30 days to response to the verification letter?

The OC will not negotiate with you if they have hired an attorney. If they have verified the debt, they can set any terms for settlement they please.
