Collection agency

I had an account with Chase Bank. I could not pay them so they sold my account to a collection agency. The agency refused to work with me to make my payments affordable. I just received a letter from another collection agency/coucelors at law stating that they have bought my account from Chase. My question is, how did they purchase my account from Chase if Chase already charged off my account and sold it to ther first collection agency. Is this even legal? How do I go about not getting ripped off. I want to pay them but I want to make sure I am paying the correct people.
The first collection agency more than likely had the account ass
The first collection agency more than likely had the account assigned to them, not sold to them. There is a big difference...they would be working on behalf of chase.
