First I would like to state that the statements that have been made about afni for the most part are incorrect on this website. but before you think that I am defending them I am not(please read the entire post. I will explain some things before offering the help you need. if you like you can skip this paragraph I will explain who I am and how I can help in the next one). The older debts out there are still collectable and still owed. A lot of them were purchased by afni. there is a lot of talk of statute of limitations and what this refers to is how long afni has to take action against a consumer such as credit reporting or filing a law suit but they can still call you and ask for payment. there is only two states that have a statutes that say collection efforts must cease after a certain amount of time and those two states are Wisconsin and Mississippi which have a six year rule. if they do take legal action the company that they have used in the past is riddle & associates. some of the bills that have been sent to consumers even have a phone number for a service that they currently have and use. this will only occur to consumers that live in what’s known as minimum pay states. this regulation says that a phone company must keep land line phone service active if the consumer pays only the minimum service amount on a phone bill. so then what happens is the non basic charges such as long distance is then put into collections while the consumers phone number is still active.
I will say that the bill is correct, more often than not is owed, and was purchased from the original creditor such as verizon. afni will not buy debts from other agency's or debt brokers as this can be a very risky practice for a collection agency to do.
