You may, but when you don't respond to the collector's initial contact within the 30 days period, it is assumed that you have agreed to the debt.

I agree with SC. If you don't dispute the debt within 30 days of the first contact from the collector, then you have lost your right to dispute it at all. If you are sued you can raise this argument (unauthorized charges on the account) in your Answer.
