I had a business 15 years ago in Europe and had to close it, with many debt. Too much money I couldn't pay back the bank. The same year, I did an import export internship to find a new job, that internship required me to go to a foreign country to learn the language. So i came here in USA, met my husband...didn't go back...got my green card...started over. 15 years later I receive a registered mail from a collection agency asking me to pay all my debts, that by now have interests and huge fees added to them, they are asking lot of money. Do you think, they have any right to ask me for the money after 15 years, do they have any way of collecting it?

Is the collection agency here or in Europe? If it is in Europe, they would have quite a hard time trying to file suit against you over here for something that didnt take place under US laws.

STatute of limitations is a term that refers to the amount of time they have to take legal action against you for these debts. In just about every state in America, this would be expired. But I am not familiar with how it would work because its from Europe. Last I recall, if you do business with a foreign company, they would have a heck of a time trying to come after you like this.

Also check your state statutes, some states have a law that no matter where the debt originated from, if you have lived within that state for a certain amount of time, you get to use that state's SOL. For example, if you live in Texas for 1 year, then you are considered a Texas Resident and you get Texas SOL, no matter what any contract says.
