No Account Number for Collections?
Date: Wed, 05/26/2010 - 12:08
I received a settlement offer from a collection agency, but noticed that they do not have an account number anywhere on the letter, only a "reference number" (which is different than the account number of the original credit card.)
Is this a red flag? Or do many collection agencies not list an actual account number? I was going to mail them a counter-offer for settlement, but want to make sure they actually own the debt. (I was stupid and didn't do a DV in time.) :-(
Any suggestions?

No...collection agencies assign there own account or reference numbers as a matter of practice. They generally do not use the clients account number.

Have you validated the debt? SoapLady is right. But, if this is a junk debt buyer who can't validate, you may want to go that route first.

Ah, okay. I just saw on some of the sample counter-offer letters a section for "account" number, and then panicked when I couldn't find one!
And, no...I didn't validate it yet. It's actually my husband's account, and I didn't see the letter until after the 30 days was up. Do you think it's worth it to try to validate it anyways even though the 30 day deadline has passed?
