I'm receiving collection letters from a group that says they own an old debt of mine. The problem is the original account number they show from the OC does not match any of my statements. But I pulled a copy of my credit report and on there is listed the OC with this same account number the junk debt buyer is trying to collect. How can the OC have a wrong account number listed and how did this junk debt buyer end up with the same wrong information?

I am confused. Can you tell as to how do you know that the original creditor (OC) is reporting the wrong account number? However, if you are sure that the OC is reporting wrong account number, you can request the OC to update your account number. You can also dispute this with the credit bureaus.

You will have to send a dispute letter to the credit bureaus, and attach a proof of your original account number. You will get a sample dispute letter at http://www.debtconsolidationcare.com/letters/sample13.html . You will have to change the wording of the letter according to your situation.

a JDB will give the bought account their own number.you need to check the original account number to find out the date of first deliquency.that will determine if this is within SOL for your state.while you are doing that.end them a DV letter certified mail return receipt.if the account number or the JDB is not on your CR then make them prove their legally entitled to collect.i doubt they are.
