do not need to file response with court?

I received a summons the other day (ny state supreme court). On the cover letter, it said I was required to reply to the summons but I did not need to go the court and file it. I just need to send a copy to the plaintiff. That sounds weird. I am inclined to file with the court anyway so my rights are protected.
