I currently have a debt that is in collections pertaing to a Verizion bill that is 3 yrs old. As some may know Verizion has had a class action lawsuit brought against them for frauargesdulent charges pertaining specifically to data charges. Consumers were being charged for things that they were unaware of (ex. the middle button on your phone where your would go into your menu if that button were to be pushed by your child, by you on accident people were being charged 1.99 or even more in some instances, just for pushing that button) Verizion aknowledged this mistake. They even acknowledged that LG who was making these phones knew this would happen. I had service with Verizion during this time period when this was occuring. I got a bill for 1300.00 +, I was unable to pay that bill being that it was so high. I spoke with someone at Verizion when i got the bill, asked them if they could send me a detailed bill. They did, after taking the time to look at the bill. I called them back and asked them what some of the charges were. The lady stated back to me that I had interenet that I DID NOT sign up for. She then told me that they give you a month of complimentary internet service, but its your responsibility to cancel it. FYI I didnt know i had complimentary internet service nor did I ever use it. I couldnt send or recieve text messages, but yet i have all these data charges. Please keep in mind that the bill is from April 2008. When I asked them to validate the debt about a yr ago. What they sent back to me was this: Thank you for contacting us. Enclosed is the bill reprint you requested. Please contact our customer service dept with any further questions. Would you consider this proper debt validation. They sent me a a copy of every bill I had. The only bill I had unpaid was the one for 1300.00. I had always paid the bill. I guess i feel like i was scammed. I signed up for a plan that was 79.00 a month, i NEVER had a bill for 79.00 there were lots of hidden charges i had no idea i was being charged for. I felt their bills were very hard to understand. I still to this day do not know what some of the charges were for. I do not feel that i should be responsible for the whole entire 1300. what should i do about this debt. ANY advice would be greatly apprecited. Whwn i called the number on my credit report the other day i got some off the wall window treatment and design company????? how should i handle this debt?

Verizon has not properly validated your debt. You should contact the customer service department of your creditor and ask them to individually clarify each and every item of the bill. However, it is a fact that you should have taken steps in order to cancel the internet connection. This would have saved you from the excessive charges.

Verizon wil NOT validate any debt as they are the original creditor(original creditors are not required by law to validate). If its still with Verizon they dont have to validate anything. If its a collection agency then YES they have to validate the debt. I would also remind Verizon and the collection agency that Verizon is being sued for exactly what they did to your account and you wont think twice about doing the same if its not validated according to FDCPA.

i actually did dispute this item last yr and trans union sent me something back saying they would put an identity fraud alert on my acct for 90 days. i was totally confused about that. i wasnt claiming identity fraud, i was simply disputing the item i thought. i am completely aware that the bill is mine, but i also feel that their were fraudulent charges made to my acct. on behalf of verizion. i had no clue i had compliementary internet service, nor was i a subscriber to data services. i feel that that alone is enough for me to dispute the whole bill. it just amazes me that they would collect on things that were fraudulently charged to millions of people. the first people i contacted about the bill was simply titled Oxford. on the letter thatthey sent back to me this is how it read: verizion wireless po box 18000 greenville, sc and then down below it it read Oxford and their address and then dear valued customer. i expected when i requested validation of debt that they would have sent me the signed contract not just a bill reprint. and if i call verizion what are the impacts of that call going to be. my brain is like mush i have read so many things it has totally confused me. i am just not sure what my first step should be when attempting to take care of this. i assume debt validation would be my first step but what is considered proper validation. regardless of whether i owe the bill or not they should be able to properly validate it. i am just curious to see if they would have that contract given that it has been through differnt collection agencies. i need step by step instructions on how to go about this. i want to tread lightly and make sure i am taking the proper steps in the correct sequence so that it doesnt come back to bite me.

anna i had no clue i even had internet service. i had absolutely no clue i cant cancel something that i didnt know that i had. if i had known i would have cancelled it. i was never told ok you have 1 month free but you need to call and cancel if you no longer want it. i was never told about the service until i got the bill and asked what it was. just another loop hole i guess i got caught up in i assume, but it doesnt make it right for them to things like that to people.

This is an interesting situation. You need to fight this at the source. Verison. Honestly I am not sure how you would go about such a thing. You could start with researching your state's laws on cellular service....utilities commissions sometimes handle it...

Since it never got properly resolved, it needs to be resolved at Verison themselves because the CAs will just keep attempting to collect on the amount that Verison says you owe. Your only option if complaining to the right entities doesn't work, is taking them to court.
