I have two medical debts, one for $1300 and one for $400. I broke my wrist in December and have no insurance. Because of my injury, my income has suffered (didn't make that much to begin with). I am presently receiving food stamps and have applied for disability. The $1300 one wants $110 a month, I can only afford $25. The $400 one wants $50 a month, I can only afford $10. The bill was $450 and I've already sent them two payments of $25, but that much is really strapping me. I charged some of the debt on Care Credit and they are charging me about 28% interest so I have that payment too which is about $75 a month. I'll be paying this off for the rest of my life.

Anyway, even though I'm sending payment the $1300 debt and the $400 are still threatening me with collection. Do they think by threatening me with collection they are going to get their money faster? I don't have it.

I'm also paying Merrick bank $21 a month. They've already charged this off and on my CR. Why should I continue to pay this?

Thanks for any advice.

Have you tried to go to the hospitals financial department? My brother did this when his wife had a stroke, and told them he was trying to get her on disability and at that time had very little income. They wrote her bills off, they were in the thousands, as a charity case. He wanted to pay them, but would have taken him probably 50 years to do so. He did pay some other medical bills off, after he explained the situation.

I have had CA work with me on medical and only took ten bucks a month as payment from my son on disability.

Good Luck..karen

My husband did that too. He was the only uninsured and naturally the one to end up in the ER twice. When we got the bills, they demanded high amounts too. I told them all $10 a month is all we can afford-take it or leave it. And $10 was all we paid monthly until we paid it off. They harrassed us every once in a while but we paid what we could. How about Medicaid? Can you qualify for that? If so, I know they will cover medicals bills prior to you getting coverage. I don't know how far back but they do if you qualify.

Also check with the financial office like mentioned above. You just might be suprised what options may be open for you.
