December 1, 2007 I posted a check for my mother for her Visa account. I made this payment in full to collection agency Titan Management Services LLC. The check was cashed but I did not receive a confirmation.

This week my mother received a new claim for the same debt from a different agency; Island National Group.

Could you advise how we should proceed with this?

Many thanks!

David

Welcome to the community David. First I would suggest sending them a debt validation letter along with a copy of the processed check (with personal information such as account/routing number and signature redacted. Let them know you had paid this amount and make them prove their case. You can find a good template for a validation letter via my signature link.

If the debt was paid in full they would have no claim. If the debt was settled in full for lesser than owed and at the time of settlment you did not get a settled in full letter then they could make a claim for the remaining. I would still folow JCEMTs advice and dispute it now so it doesn't haunt you later on. I would deffintely send it in writing return receipt but I would also follow up with some phone calls after they received your written communication.

Dollar and Since,
You are right! It appears they are trying to get the difference between the settlement amount paid and the amount of the original debt. I am sending the original settlement letter plus proof of payment. Hopefully this will do the trick. Thanks for your help!

I made a payment through Titan Managements Services of $429.06 to pay off my Macy's charge on August 7, 2007. Macy's continues to include negative reporting on my credit reports. Macy's now tells me (12-31-08) that Titan was mistaken when they sent me the letter and payment receipt that this account problem was settled. Macy's claims that I still owe a balance of over $200. I feel this whole process has been a scam and deceitful. Every time I have made inquiries into this mess (which was generated by Macy's), a new wrinkle seems pops up of which I was totally unaware. Suggestions PLEASE!

The same thing is happening to me. I settled with and paid Macy's through Titan in February '07. I recently got a new collections letter from another company looking to collect the interest! When I called to disput it, the woman on the phone outwardly called me a liar and said if I was telling the truth I would have a letter from Titan then screamed and hung up on me!! I'm sure they get a lot of BS stories from people but I was being honest and therefore quite angry! Of course in '07, I never knew I would need a letter since I believed I was paying in full and that my bank statement would support it. Now when I try to call Titan to get information, THERE NUMBER IS DISCONNECTED! I don't know what to do :(

After a bit of searching, I've found a new contact number for Titan Management Services - wanted to share with those who, like me foudn their number disconnected. It is
678-906-2096. I called to confirm the number is real, but did not yet try reaching a live person.

tried that new number for Titan ( 678-906-2096) and all the options and kept getting a message from Jennifer Nehow? or something like that saying she is a director of management services and to leave a message....is anyone else just outraged by this...I paid them in "full" according to them in December of 2007, and now I'm getting a letter for the balance of the original amount from and island national group. WTF?! any suggestions? When I called them approx 1 month after I made my payment asking for the letter, they stated that they don't give letters to confirm that the debt is paid, and I said you better fax something of email or send me something and they said they'd email me something....NOTHING was received, called back again and of course the person and their extension no longer exists.
Has anyone gotten through to TMS???

here is what I would do....

to the OP, you said that you have a copy of the cancelled check as well as the settlement letter they sent you. IF this is so, then you need to contact the FTC IMMEDIATELY. You need to report Titan for this--they settled a debt with you, even put it in writing that if you paid that amount, the issue would be done, and then they sold the debt to someone else. That is fraud in itself, and this happens all the time it seems. We need to put a stop to crap like that--it is simply not legal. But nothing will happen unless people stand up for themselves. If you have a settlement letter from ANY collection agency, and you can prove that you paid that amount to them, you should immediately file a complaint with the FTC if they pull this garbage. What they did was tell you "the account is closed, we consider this matter done and over with", and then they sold the "remaining debt" for PROFIT. The FTC should rip into them like crazy for that....

Hi, My story is almost identical to the stories I've read. I paid my debt with Titan end of 2007 and now im getting calls from a different debt collector SMS saying i still owe Macys money. I told them i had paid the debt and they said i had to submit a letter, so i called Titan and got a voice mail receiver, no live people. Should I contact the FDC? Or what can i do?

I have had the same experience as the rest of you. OCS is calling me reguarding an old Macy's account that I settled. I have no letter showing the agreement or that the balance was settled, but the dtrange thing is, Macy's has no info on me anymore and OCS has the origional account number but it doesn't even come close to matching my origional account number. They are trying to collect the remaining balance even though I settled. Well, Titan has had their license pulled and is in the middle of a huge suit, so I doubt that any of us will get letters like we need. My suggestion is that we keep fighting this and maybe someone can organize a class-action suit. I realize that we wouldn't get anything, but just to have the debts shown clear would be great.

Macy never sent us a bill for grandaughter's Easter clothes.
From $50 charge--increased to $142 thru Titan. Paid off in full a year ago. Received phone call from collection agency Oxford Management Services tonight saying I owed bill. Going to see Macy's management tomorrow!

I feel your pain. The exact same thing happened to me. I received the letter from the new collection agency one week before I was schedule to deploy to Iraq. This "company" (Titan) is obviously trying to take advantage of people that made mistakes and are stuck in tough situations. When I called, the lady also got mad at me and stated that I was the one that didn't pay my bills not them, apparently trying to justify how she was treating me. I will do my best to expose this company... as soon as I get back home.
