My sister is developmentally disabled. I am her payee. She lived in a very bad area for awhile. Sometime in 1998 or 1999 someone in her apartment building purchased somethng from Fingerhut. My siser swears it was not her. This account was originally for $263 and is now up to $467 or more. It should have fallen off her credit report some time in 2006. I know it is past the 7 years. According to the first credit report we pulled for her the purchase was made in March 1999. They keep selling the account to different agencies and it is now with UFC. I have disputed this every time it shows up with a different company. While she live there someone also opened a Capital One in her name and maxed it out in a week. It took over a year to straighten that out. I have paid all debts that she owed but I refuse to pay one she doesn't. How do I get rid of this?

Make UFC validate the account. As per the federal and state laws, they have to give all necessary information on the account and the last payment date posted with the original company. You should also have the calculation of interests and fees that brought up this total. This way, you will be exercising your rights on this CA and get the accurate picture of the account.

Notify the credit bureau about the item you think is not right. They will verify with the data furnishers and get proof. You can also contact the companies and get more details. There should be your signature in the contract to prove that you owe the debt. If it cannot be proven, they cannot say you are indebted. You don't have to pay on anything on which you are not sure it belongs to you. The CRA has to prove the item if they decide to report in your credit copy.
