Received a message from Officer John B???
Date: Wed, 10/28/2009 - 06:32
Should I just ignore them?? I have ignored United Legal before and they stopped for about six months. This is the first message I have received in a long time but they have never identified themselves as an officer before. As I said, he was very hard to understand. What do I do?

i answered your PM so i will answer here as well.they are using different verbage because people are on to them, and no longer swayed by their calls.so they have to throw the word government around.yes ignore the calls as usual.

You don't....not exactly like that. They are trying to scare you. The fact this person called and identified them self as Officer ANYTHING is a big red flag. No kind of law enforcement collects debts. That message is chalk full of violations. KEEP IT! That is such good evidence of their unlawful and potentially damaging antics! They could have caused you undue stress over this lie....and it IS a lie..this person is not an officer of anything.
If this debt they have is not on your credit reports and you have gotten nothing in the mail, then just completely ignore these guys....it sounds like they are that typical debt collector scammers who seem to pick names out of a magician's hat....or throw darts at white pages and harass whoever they get.
you don't.that is just verbage meant to scare people.

I'd be finding a lawyer and suing the pants off them. FDCPA violations are all over that message. I think you can get like $1,000 per violation. I'm not sure if the message would only count as 1 violation, or if it would be considered multiple violations inside one message. Either way, don't toss that out.
It is against the law to impersonate a law enforcement officer.

Unfortunately FDCPA violations are only worth $1000 per action, not violation and since these calls likely originate in another country, they would be very hard to find for suit.

I received numbers calls from foreign speaking people. The tell me that my SSN is under investigation and I need to repay my loan now or that can gaurantee what would happen to me. The guys also called my sister twice and she misunderstood them, she has a hearing loss, and she thought I used her SSN to take out a loan. They told her that if did not pay on the loan, law eonforcement would come after her.
I received another call at work and the caller told the employee and my ssn is under investigation, etc, etc. I took me about a week to quell the romors. Another and last time, the caller gave me the same song and dance, I asked him which creditor are you or who do you represent, he did not answer. He did tell me that since I am not paying and being uncooperative, he is turning my "case" over to the New York AG. This went on for a few minutes, actually I was having being an a**hole to him. Anyway, I took a pencil and tapped the telephone near the microphone, he asked what was that clicking and I told him, "Oh the tape ran out on my recored and I need to replace it". He said, "what you mean"? I toldhim it was recording the conversation because in Ohio, only one party has to be aware the call is being recorded. After i told him he was recorded, which was not, he hung up and never called again. That was in July. The way I dealt these type of calls is to remain calm and don't get scared. Give them as much s&&t to them as they give you.
