What is good for validating a medical bill

I have a collection on 2 of my credit reports for a $79 medical bill that I just learned about the other week. I sent a VOD letter to the collection agency and they sent me a statement telling me to pay. My question is what constitues good proof from a collection agency to validate a medical bill? If the collection agency sends detailed information then won't my doctor be viloating HIPPA or privacy acts for giving that information to them?

They have to prove that the debt is yours, that it is owed and that they are legally entitled to collect it. It has been, most likely, charged off by the doctor and purchased by them. If you do not believe you owe it don't pay it.
