need help with collection

New to the forums but have been reading a lot and learning... thanks for the great information!
I have a collection agency looking to collect on an old account from Verizon. When I last moved I canceled my service, but for whatever reason, Verizon only canceled my phone service and not my DSL service. They charged me for 3 months when I did not live there and would not have even been able to use DSL since I did not have a phone account. I had dealt with Verizon on this then (2004), but apparently they never credited my account. Now Verizon has no records as they sent them to collection (Pallisades). What are my options to ensure this doesn't negatively impact my credit?
Thanks!

do you know the last month of activity in 2004?
Did you request validation from this debt collector?

Live in California. Last activity was in September or October 2004. The debt collector sent me the invoices from Verizon, but the problem is that Verizon was wrong in the first place and when I try and call them, they have no records, because they sold them to Pallisades.
Thanks

They sent you invoices? Have you sent them a debt validation letter yet?

Verizon has the records, regardless of what they say. I had a simmiliar problem with AT&T and they were able to find the records and fix the problem. Contact Verizon's Consumer Advocate and explain the problem to them and they should be able to send the CA a letter recinding the charges.
You should be able to get this address from the Verizon website. If not get the corporate phone number and call the Office of the President for help.

I am wondering if the SOL is up. If it is an oral contract then that is 2 years and they can try to sue you but it will get thrown out. If it is a written contract, that is 4 years so that is probably why they are bugging you.

I would send a DV letter to Pallisades to keep them busy and then start tagging Verizon. If you can get this fixed through Verizon it will solve the problem with Pallisades. I am sure Verizon still has records but they might be archived. They can dig them up.
I had a similar problem with a 5th3rd bank account about 10 years ago. I closed my bank account because I was moving out of state. I don't remember the exact numbers but it went something like this. For some reason the bank charged me a 0.11 (11 cent) fee about 3 days after I closed the account. That fee escalated over 3 years to something like 700.11. Some collection agency tracked me down after three years and started hounding me over that 700 bucks. Of course I was bewildered since I new I had a zero balance when I closed that account. I just ignored the collection agency and went to town on the bank. They gave me the run arounds for months claiming they could not get the records and accusing me of bouncing checks to create this problem. I told them if they couldn't pull the records then they also couln't prove I owed the money. Anyway after about 6 months I was finally put in touch with some researcher burried inside the bank that new how to get the records off of some storage bins or something. Anyway the record of course showed the 0.11 charged and then a ton of late fees, overdraft fees and ISF fees. Anyway I got them to reverse everything but they said they could do nothing for my credit report. It did not matter though because the line item fell off not to long after I resolved the problem.

Thanks for all the replies. If I can't get Verizon to dig through their records and remove it, what happens if I just pay the CA? It's only like $74? Thanks again!

A paid collection on you CR's is as bad as if not worse than an unpaid collection. Also, this would fall under the UCC SOL of 4 years.
