Recently I got a collection letter from the Law offices of Michael J Scott. I see on here he's pretty vicious and I'm not sure what to do. I took out a massive private college loan years ago, and was a victim of a violent crime and ended up disabled with a diagnosis of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and currently recieve SSI. I'm also not quite sure if this qualifies as one of those predatory loan type things. It was a $30,000 loan (in hindsight not very smart... looking back I also don't get how in the world they even gave me that much... this was back in 2007 I believe?)

At any rate with interest the balance is now $47,931. It's not like I took the loan just to go blow a bunch of money, I had actually intended on following through with college, getting a degree and paying it off... but I can't help what happened to me.

I don't have the money to be able to afford a lawyer as SSI really doesn't pay much, I barely make it from month to month. I don't even think I have the money to file bankruptcy and I just really don't know what to do and need help! I get overwhelmed easy enough as it is with PTSD and I'm about sick to my stomach worrying over this.

Not sure if it makes a difference or not but I live in Virginia currently, and got this loan when I lived in Pennsylvania.

Well I sent a letter to them requesting proof of debt, or whatnot.

If they sue me, what are my options? Are there any attorneys who won't gouge me (I literally live month to month, don't make it far with only getting less than $700 a month from SSI. Usually at the end of the month after bills I only have about $20 left if I'm lucky)? Bankruptcy? Any help? =(
