Portfolio Recovery just called my house and spoke to my room mate ( I was showering). The woman on the phone told him the amount of my debt and that they were taking me to court. Can they do that? Discuss my debt with others with out my permission?

Portfolio Recovery is a collection agency based at Norfolk, Virginia. The collection agency cannot discuss your debts with your room mate. It is prohibited as per the FDCPA guidelines. You can take legal actions against the debt collector if he/she violates the FDCPA guidelines. However, this has to be done within 1 year of the violation of FDCPA guidelines. You can even register your complaints against the debt collector with the FTC and your State Attorney General.
