So I owe some medical bills that have gone to collections. Today I received a Voluntary Wage Deduction in the mail with a sticky note on it to sign and give it to my HR dept. If I don't sign this and turn it is is it a good likelyhood that they will take me to court for it? If so I would rather do the voluntary wage assignment instead of having a court on my credit report. Should I go this route? The bill is for a good few grand for hospital bills my son had when he had kidney disease.
Thanks for any help!

I am in Illinois. The hospital bills are from about 3 years ago. It is a local collection agency in my city. The total that I owe them is all of the different bills put together. Various tests, hospital visits. We had to see many dr's and hospitals before we were finished.
Thanks!

Did you have insurance at the time and this is what you owed after the fact, or were you uninsured? If you were uninsured, I would contact the hospital business office to see if they have programs you might qualify for. Depending on whether the hospital is a non-profit or not, this could make a difference.

yes I was insured, and this is what was left after the fact of it being paid. I honestly don't even know if my job will honor voluntary wage assignments. I believe they had to be through the court before they will even look at them. I've never had one of these before and am wondering if this is the step they use before suing in court?

Wage assingments is different than wage garnishments. garnishments is when they go through court. you can revoke wage assingments. i agree that maybe you should see if there are any programs. my brother had surgery a few months ago with no insurance and he is working with an organization. nothing was really finished yet but he has a year to settle everything. (the organization is taking long on their end)
i am not sure what route you should go through.. perhaps a judge would be sympathic to your case if they did take you to court? i really do not know what to tell you. hang tight, someone will be around to help.
