Student Loan collectors and Credit Card collectors have different laws they go by, some are similar. for instance, a CC collector calls and you just hang up, they will call you back the next day. if you hang up on, lets say WAM, by law they have to wait 14 days before they are allowed to call back, if they accidently do call within the 14 day period, they have violated the FDCPA and can be fined and/or further actions. CC collectors are more rude and cut throat.

A verbal C&D *might* work, by luck. However, the FDCPA specifically states [15 USC 1692c(c)] that it must be in writing, so nice try. I am personally going to assume the OP works for them because a verbal C&D has *NO* legal leg to stand on and a consumer advocate would never say such a thing.
