Debt Settlement Offer

I called them and they offered to settle for $3500 of the $4800 they said I owed. I made them a counter-offer saying that I would pay them in full $2700 to resolve the issue. They accepted and faxed me a letter to that effect.
I sent them the payment and verified that it was delivered by the date on my settlement offer. Today I received a new statement from my credit card company showing the $2700 as a "payment" and that I still owed $2100.
What can I do? Notify the attorney general and better business bureau? Can I sue them for breach of contract and get my $2700 back? If I knew they were just going to take my $2700 as a payment, I'd have NEVER paid them a dime! HELP!!

If your letter says to pay $2,700 by Date X and you did that (and have proof that you did that) they cannot come back and sue you for the balance. However, if you were late with the payment, they will argue that what you did was make a "payment" and still owe. Assuming you did everything that you were supposed to, I would send a copy of the letter and your timely payment to the 3 major credit bureaus and contest anything other than a "satisified in full" notation. If you continue to get letters or calls about the debt and you have done everything that you are supposed to, collect and save that information and then contact an attorney to assist you with your FDCPA/state claims case.
