I am trying to pay any collections from the past, but can't figure out who to pay. Some of the collection agencies on my report say they no longer own these debts. after how long to transfered or sold off debts post to my report? Also, is there a way to find out who I need to pay?

Thanks,
Joe

Welcome to the forums. First off, I'm assuming you've alreay obtained your credit report. You could mail a letter of valiation to each item on your report to see if the debt is even valid. Once when you receive something back, you'll find out (more in detail) what company the agency is representing, and how much you owe.

If nothing comes back, or the item is an error, then chances are you can get any error or such item removed from your credit report.

Hope this helps.

Regards
Mike

After contacting the companies appearing in your credit report, it seems that they are not holding your accounts presently. At this time, your account might have been passed on to some other collection agency. You might need to wait for some time till another collection agency calls you up for recovering the debt.

Have you pulled the reports from the three bureaus? You can compare all the three reports and reach to some specific conclusions.

You can get some useful tips from the "Do It Yourself" section in this website given below. This section will help you on how to deal with your creditors and provide useful debt negotiation tips.

You can also consult a debt councilor for this purpose. He will be actively negotiating with your creditors to reduce the financial charges and the late fees added on the total amount of your debt. You will be offered a reduced amount that will be much easier for you to pay.

I took a free counseling in this website and the consultant worked with my creditors for a reduced payment plan. He also offered me advice on how to save money so that I can contribute towards the debt account more conveniently.

Do you have a way to check your current credit. It's best if you don't wait for their calls, only because the new clock starts ticking when they get the account.

What type of debt is this? If you call the original creditor, or even if this was with another collection agency- you could call them, to find out who owns the account now.

If you show some innitative, maybe they'd be more willing to work with you since you'd be the first person doing the contact. This has worked with a previous debt of mine, that they weren't even preparped for my phone call because they had just bought the account earlier week. They gave me a big break!

Hope this helps-
Mike
