Does it look nice if we sign a contract before lending an amount to a roommate?

I have read that it’s better to sign a document before lending money to anyone. But, my question is, does it look nice? My roommate has asked about $500.

Ideally, you should do so. It depends on you - what you think. If you're sure that your roommate will repay the amount, then you can lend it. But, it's better to make an agreement, if the lending amount is big.
