I need help settling out of my medical debt. I am low income and cannot afford to pay all of it off. I am already in a lawsuit with one of the collections agencies. All together it is well under $5,000 but I cannot afford to pay off all of it. What can I do?

You can file Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. It is a liquidation bankruptcy designed to wipe out your general unsecured debts such as credit cards and medical bills.

There are some options to solve your medical debt problems. You can rent a portion of your house if possible. You can sell unwanted items. At least, you'll get some cash with which you can manage a bit and then negotiate to settle the debt.

If you have insurance, then have a talk with your insurer and ask them to negotiate for the medical debt. That would definitely be of some help. Also as others said, you can sell unwanted goods, and can take out a HELOC, or a home equity loan!
