Okay last night I pulled our free annual credit reports and on them, I found the accounts that were discharged in the bankruptcy in 2000 are showing zero balance, but last report date is 9/2006. Can they legally keep reporting $0 balance? Will this keep restarting the 7 year clock? Also, on there it is showing several inquires from early 2004. Aren't these suppose to drop off after two years? Now there are a few things on hubby's report showing last report date from 1999. Shouldn't this kind of stuff fallen off by now? It is accounts that were paid off in 1998.

There is no fixed period for positive accurate information to stay in the credit file. The law states that credit reporting agencies should not report a bankruptcy case on a person's credit report after ten years from the date the bankruptcy case is filed. There is no question of SOL getting renewed because the debt has already been discharged under bankruptcy.

For any credit discrepancies, contact the Federal Trade Commission, Bureau of Consumer Protection, Education Division, Washington, D.C. 20580. The telephone number is (202) 326-2222. That office can provide further information on reestablishing credit and addressing credit problems. For information on credit practices, contact (202) 326-3224.
