Updating credit report with paid accounts
Date: Wed, 09/19/2007 - 07:30
Before I went around paying debts that were charged off/in collections, I wish I would have noticed your letter for a "Pay for Delete". I did write my own letter included with the payments giving my new mailing address, etc. I keep very good records with my bank and am able to print out the fronts and backs of checks as they clear...making sure there is proof they accepted my payment.
Here's my question...since the payments have already been made & cleared...what is the correct way to go back to this companies & request that they update my credit report with positive remarks? I'm wondering what kind of remarks I might want...something like "Paid as agreed"? What would be the best so that my credit improves?
Also, some of accounts have double entries...one from the original creditor and then one from the collection agency. How do I do the correspondence so that everyone is on the same page & everyone reports it in the same way?
Thanks so much...I have lots of questions ;)

Hello debrag_25,
What is the status of those collection accounts on your credit report now? What does it say?
When I paid a collection two years ago they "forgot" to update the status and I had to call them and basically force them to update it to "Paid"
Lots of questions? You are at the right place :D

Thanks for replying :)
The status of these accounts say either "charge off" or "in collections".
I would like to start off communicating with them in writing - at least the first time around. That way I can have something in writing that I've sent to them. What do you think? What's the best way to resolve this...

Yes, you should definitely start in writing. Get their adresses and mail out copies of the checks that you have paid with plus a letter, demanding the status change. Have a copy of your credit report included (not the whole report, just their part). Send it out via certified mail, with a delivery receipt!
You also have to make sure that you are looking at a current report. Where are you receiving your credit reports from?
I'm receiving them directly from Equifax, TransUnion & Experian.
I'm receiving them directly from Equifax, TransUnion & Experian. I'm also working through each of these seperately so that my reports are monitored & I can view them at any time. I'm not using a seperate service for this so I can make sure there isn't any confusion.
Certified mail with a delivery receipt is a great way to go. I never thought about including their section of my credit report! Nice!
How long should they have to change the status?
Thanks!
Debra

Hi Debra,
When I had that problem I was still not that much trained, so I did it over the phone. They updated it in about a month. I would suggest you give them a call after you see the delivery confirmation and keep calling them until they say that it has indeed been updated. The monitor the credit report you should be fine in about a month! :D
