I need to get a CC to boost my credit. I currently have no revolving accounts, which i know cripples my score. I have student loans that are all current, but they had past delinquicy (2005). They also have a I guess high balances compared to amount borrowed. I also have a few accts in collections, which are being paid and stem from either a PDL or one bank overdraft.

At last check my EQ score was around 637, I think the others were low 600s though time has passed since i last checked and i got one CA deleted since then, which I assume helps.

Is there anything out there I can do? I want to boost my score for a car loan or apartment down the road.

This MIGHT help....

If you have never had a MACY's card in the past you defaulted on.... go to any Macy's store and apply. You will need a Major card to apply online/phone, but only a DL for an instore application if you dont have a major card. If you are accepted, you CL wont be much, and will only be good at Macys, but it would be a start and eventually might help you avoid the high fee subprime unsecured major cards out there AND eventually might lead to Macy's VISA card further down the road.

I still recommend going with a secured cc thru your credit union or BOA, etc...how it works is you put x amount of money into a savings account...your credit line is equal to your deposit. Interest rate is usually better than getting a store cc.

And yes, you can rent with a collection account...what they're looking for is usually an eviction or criminal activity. If you don't have any, then you should be fine. I know a woman who rented with a score in the low 400's (after a divorce).
