Building credit again

When I was in my early 20's I received 3 credit cards in the mail and charged them to the max since I didn't know better at that time I spent years trying to get the balance down I then got laid off of work and fell into debt and my cards were charged off not to mention my monthly bills that fell into debt now that I got back on my feet and paid off most of my debt there are still some more date that I need to pay I also now have a credit card that is valid and current that I have to pay for annually but besides paying off the small balance that is left is there any other ways I can help rebuild my credit that it once was?
