I need to rent a car as my vehicle is in a auto repair shop. I have heard that the car rental companies check the credit reports of the consumers. So, will they check my credit report before renting a car? If yes, then will that be considered as hard inquiry or soft inquiry? How long will it stay on my credit report?

It is true that many rental car companies run credit checks on renters if they pay off the rent through a debit card. The car rental companies consider it as a risk if you don't have a credit card to pay off the dues. It is considered as a red flag to the rental car companies highlighting the fact that you're at a credit risk. Such inquires will be considered as a hard inquiry and will remain on your credit report for at least two years. The impact on your credit score will be limited and will reduce over time.
