my husband did charge-offs on debts ex-wife made over 9 years ago--(he says he gave her money to pay bills and she lied about paying)whatever-- two sides to every story I know-- someone is now calling him about one of these old debts--will this effect my excellent credit rating? He has been advised by tax preparer to hang up on them-- is this all that needs to be done or do I need to get a lawyer?

thank you morning star--I thought that was the case regarding charge-offs --except for the fact that my eldest brother recently bought another piece of property-- and a car loan he had already settled more than 10 years ago with ex-wife(she caught him with current wife and tried to run him over in SUV but crashed vehicle instead--managed to clip him in hip and he still has limp to this day which he probably deserves okay? lol)--true story--but--the demolished vehicle was an issue covered and taken care of monetarily in divorce court yet still mysteriously came up as a debt unpaid on his credit report WAY after 7 year limitation--he and new wife paid debt off ONCE again through an unknown company that supposedly held debt (he says he has now paid debt for this vehicle 3 times --(twice as a settlement in past 7 years to knock percentage off their interest rates on real estate purchases)-so I am wondering how this practice continues? and keeps effecting interest rates and title company searches and loans? How can these people keep claiming that money is owed and keep cashing in because people pay what they actually no longer owe so it doesn't cost them more money in the long run? It is a form of extortion that seriously needs to be looked into when our country gets back on track and has time to consider these matters--call me paranoid--but I am very skeptical when companies are calling you about something you supposedly still owe and can effect your credit rating and get away with it--and you have to spend your time fighting for the truth to prevail! What is going on here in America? people who aren't even citizens in this country seem to have more rights than I do and believe me--I love all peoples and have many nationalities in my extended family --but I also grew up loving my country and having pride in my country--I can still remember "Flag Day" celebrations in grade school when my heart was pounding because I WAS and am STILL so proud to be an American!I am about as patriotic and "God Bless The U.S.A. as the mold was forged!" But I guess the older I get the more I am disheartened with the way Americans who are trying their darndest to do the right thing and make an honest living are repeatedly being treated wrongly by people who are only trying to bring them down in the greed and interest of profit-- I thank God for this site where people are helping others and fighting back with the information we all need! Thanks to all who have helped others on this site--- if you have encouraged one more person to help someone else-- as long as we can keep "passing it on" good things will prevail!

Thanks again morning star--I think what happens to a lot of people is they assume someone isn't breaking the law--or it SIMPLY wouldn't be allowed to happen--or they think for example "okay -- it will cost me this much time and money to go to court and I could receive x- amount of dollars--or I could simply pay this much now that I DON'T owe--and be done with it"--but when you do that a lot of times it isn't over-- but of course you don't realize that until it pops up once again on your credit report!!!--allowing collection agencies free reign to negatively effect credit ratings is the same as having the fox guard the hen house--it shouldn't be happening--and I really hope that the system is revamped soon! There is no excuse for all the horror stories out there! Ca's will say "stop whining and pay your debt" but I say "Prove the debt is mine and that I actually still owe it BEFORE you are allowed to show up on my credit report!!!!!"
