Once a year would be good. But you must also check your score every time before taking out a loan or credit card. Make sure you pull out reports from at least 3 major credit bureaus - Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.

It's best to check your credit report once at the end of every quarter. Technically, this means that you have to check your credit report at least 4 times in a year. You can get a free copy of your credit report from the annualcreditreport.com.
