I'd like to know if it is always safe to use your debit card. In the past I have had issues of identity theft, so don't feel very confident about using debit cards. But I am also facing issues as my credit card debts are piling up. What are my options? Can I safely transact with a debit card?

Well Loren, I think debit card is quite safe. As far as identity theft is concerned, you can contact your bank and fill up a fraud affidavit and start monitoring your account closely with a new set of things.
The transactions are subject to Electronic Fund Transfer Act, so you can check out the Federal Trade Commission's guide on electronic banking,

I do not have any credit cards at this time (we went through a rough financial period due to job loss). I use my debit card all the time. I am very careful with it. I monitor my bank account online daily to make sure unauthorized charges don't appear. I only use the card for online purchases at secure sites (look for the lock icon in the bottom bar of your screen).

You could also continue to use your credit card, but deduct the charged amounts from your checkbook register as soon as you make the charge. That way, when the bill comes, you've already set aside the money to pay it off. You could even make a weekly payment to avoid maxing out your card.
