A credit freeze is the procedure to prevent access to your credit report by anyone which also includes you. It is also known as credit lock down, credit report lock down or a security freeze.

You can freeze your credit report requesting each of the three major credit reporting agencies. The District of Columbia and 47 states has enacted laws requiring credit bureau to allow consumers to enable credit freeze.

Credit freezes prevent anyone from opening any type of credit account without your permission. Almost all states charge to place one unless you have been a victim of identity theft with an OPEN case with your police department.
