Credit Monitoring Service

Are these worth it? I got my free annual credit report from the three agencies, but none provide a credit score. And it's come to my attention that now I am sending Goodwill letters to my creditors to remove negative reporting, that I will have no way to verify if they do it unless I pay to have my credit report (again) or to get my credit score.

So I'm thinking I should order one of those monitoring services and then cancel it once I no longer need it. They seem a little expensive, but probably worth it.

Anyone with experience using one of these services? What should I be looking for?

Hi Ball mich,

You won't get the credit score from your credit report. You will have to separately buy the credits core from myfico. As for regular checking of your credit reports, you will have to pay for it. You are entitled to get a copy of your free credit report from Annual Credit Report only once in a year.

Rather than getting help from a credit monitoring service you yourself can try to maintain your credit. You may have to pull your credit report atleast one in two months for that purpose.

Thanks

while that's a thought lisa.there is alot of bottomfeeders that will illegaly report.not to mention id theft.a credit monitoring service is not such a bad thing.stories abound on these forums of people trying to finance a car,or house only to be denied because of a questionable entry.to expound on your last point.alot of places charge to pull credit more than once a year.alot of places make it cheaper to pay a yearly fee than the one timer it takes to pull on in two months.

Well, based upon the Equifax website, it costs $10.95 for each credit report and $15.95 for a credit report with the FICO score. That's per report.

There are many different Credit Monitoring Services, but most seem to be about $14.95/month. Most include credit reporting for all three credit bureau's, varying amount of times they report your credit score (but generally 4x per year or as your score changes), email alerts for changes to your credit report, and ID Theft insurance (not that interested in this but...).

I don't know what the best "deal" is, but that probably varies by person and what they are looking for. I don't know what I am looking for exactly...

That is definately one that I am considering. However, I'm just not sure if it would be more beneficial to use a service that give me all three credit reports/scores.

I'm trying to narrow it down this week and order something soon.

Today I signed up for both MyFICO Quarterly (Transunion) and Scorewatch (Equifax). I paid for the annual subscription because I figure I'll need the service for at least a year, so why not take the discount. Sucks to pay that much money up front though.

Anyway, the scores aren't as bad as I thought they would be: Equifax 618, Transunion 643. I mean, I have eight negative reporting accounts including over $115k in settled debt and a foreclosure on top of that. I figured I'd be well below 600.

Wise decision. I use True Credit from Experian. They give a daily update on experian, daily notification of changes on all three and a full 3 bureau each 30 days. It is necessary while you are going through a lot of changes to follow up, because these people do not necessarily follow through with their words.

Thought an update was warranted. It's 18 months since I last reported and I'm now at Equifax 695 and Transunion 705. I'm really trying hard to get everything over 700 right now, because I want to refinance my mortgage in March and 700 is typically a number where you can get a lower rate.

Since last report, I've disputed up a storm with sporadic success. On average 2-3 of my charge-offs have been removed from my credit reports, but the 2-3 differ on each different credit report.

For example, I've gotten my Wells Fargo CC removed on Equifax and Experian, but can't get it off Transunion despite many attempts. But the Bank of America Card is off Transunion and Equifx, but I can't get it off the Experian report. Crazyiness.

The Wells Fargo foreclosure, Wells Fargo HELOC settlement, and Discover credit card have been the toughest disputes.
