I had a credit card debt of $5000 with Chase leftover from a bad divorce that was sold to Unifund as a collections account. Two of my credit reports (Experian and Equifax) show that the balance at Chase as "$0 balance/paid off/sold to colletions" and a balance due to Unifund for $5,000. The other credit report (Transunions) shows "$5,000 due to Chase" and "$5,000 due to Unifund". I am currently paying down the debt to Unifund. Chase is no longer interested in getting my payments.

Is this proper reporting by Transunion? Can Tranunion report the same debt twice? I am asking because I am trying to re-fi my mortgage and my credit score at Experian and Equifax is in the mid 700's but the Tranunion score is in 500's because it looks like I have twice the collections debt at Transunion. I called Tranunion but they told me they could not change it. What should I do?

It is legal for Chase to report their tradeline, as well as the fact that it was a collection/chargeoff, and has been sold/transferred. However, because they sold it, your balance with them is indeed zero. They no longer have any title or interest to that debt.

Hence, Experian/Equifax are reporting it correctly, where Transunion shouln't be showing a balance.

Creditors and the bureaus do have an obligation to report factual information; and you do have a right to dispute inaccurate info. Transunion should not have told you they can't change it.

There are two avenues for you to dispute the inaccuracy. You can dispute it through Transunion (they cannot refuse) either by mail, phone or on their website. By certified mail is the best way, because then you have a written record and proof they received it. After they receive your dispute, they in turn pass it onto the creditor for verification.

Second, you can dispute it directly with Chase. Send them a letter stating that they are reporting inaccurately, and that you demand them to correct their tradeline.

Either way, Chase must verify their records, and then they must report the outcome/corrections to Transunion within 30 days. If they fail to respond within those 30 days, then the whole account must be removed from your credit report.

Excellent post Debtcruncher. KelseyMatt if you don't currently have something in writing from the collection agency stating that they obtained the debt from Chase then request that they send you one in writing. Having this will greatly help your chances of having it easily removed from TransUnion(they always do seem to be the most difficult to work with).

Danell, only time will tell with that one. If you did infact owe them money than more than likely they did pass it off to a collection agency. Some collection agencies will make arangements with you where they won't report it on your credit if you make payment arrangments with them. If it is already being reported on your credit you could ask them for a letter stating they will delete it from your credit once it is paid in full.

Best of luck!
