That sounds like a crock to me. What state are you in, since you divorced in 2004 how can they say that you are responsible for his debt. You were legally divorced in 2004. What are you suppose to notify absolutely everyone in your life that yu are divorced.
Someone will be along to help yu, it just sounds stupid to me.

If it is his hospital bill, and it occurred after your divorce...there is no way you can be responsible for it. I would definitely call your AG or dept. of financial institutions for your state and file a complaint. I wonder if that also could be considered a hippa violation??
