First, you need to get a copy of all three of your credit reports and find out what is on there. If there is anything wrong, you can dispute it and try and get it removed.

Although you can't legally erase debt you owe, you can get information corrected and get rid of some of the collection accounts should the company not be able to validate them.
Also make sure that you are paying everything that you have now on time, it will help establish a good paying history. Some companies will look at the age of problems on your credit report-for example if you had a lot of problems 5 years ago, but everything recent looks good, they may be more willing to help.
