Annual Credit Report Scam:
Not sure where to post this, so a Moderator can move it if needed.

Has anyone ever request the free annual credit report on www(dot)annualcreditreport.com?

Now I've been employed for a month, I going to start working on paying off some of my outstanding debts.

This is the second year I have used it and have had problems getting my Equifax report both times. I'm not able to do it online and when I call Equifax (I, of course, get someone in India), they try telling me I have already requested it and I will now have to pay for one.

I just about shouted at the guy today because he couldn't understand what I was saying, and I was confusing him by going off his script, and all he could do was keep telling me I have to pay for one. I tried explaining to him it's probably showing I requested it; however, I never received it so there's an error.

I think my cat would have understood me better, when I explained it to him, than the guy I was talking to! If not, at least he would have purred some for me!

I got the other two CR's with no problems; Equifax is the only one giving me grief.

The conspiracy theorist in me, makes me think Equifax does this on purpose so they can get unsuspecting people to pay for what they are required to provide for free.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this, or encountered anything similar?

The upside to this, if there is one, is that my other two credit reports aren't nearly as trashed as I thought they would be. I don't have one CA reporting anything on it; only the OC's. How in the heck did that happen? I thought sure I'd see an entry on them from Il-Legal Mediation Mal-Practice and have to sue them again, only this time for FCRA violations.

I guess my DV letters were received and understood after all!

I have to deal with CSC and not EQ unfortunately but, from what I have read, if you get routed to India, immediately ask to be transferred to a domestic English speaking human on the North American Continent. Don't accept anything less. I added the date I pulled my reports last year into my Outlook and added the corresponding date into the next year to remind me when to pull. Leap year, so it might be off a day or so. Just sent you a PM with some additional info

I have had problems with Equifax also and have requested it in writing without paying for it. For some reason the annualcreditreport.com website tells you that you have already received the free report when in fact you have not. You just need to unfortunately write them and use snail mail.

Good luck

Annual Credit Report Scam:
Ron,

High had the a similar problem, it stated that it was unable to provide me with a copy on-line. This has been happening for about the last year.

So I found a number to call and got customer service, I explained what had happened and they sent me out a copy of my report and I had them transfer me to tech support to see what is the problem. Tech support said it appears that the info that Annual Credit Report send with the request causes a verification error. She went ahead and made a request and gave me the report number and it allowed me to access it on-line.

This is a new problem which makes me think that Equifax changed their software and it doesn't conform with the website.

LET'S SEE ....
1. THEY PROVIDE "INFORMATION" THAT DENIES YOU AN ACCOUNT SOMEWHERE.
2. THEY CHARGE YOU 15 BUCKS TO SEE YOU REPORT OR WHY YOU WERE REFUSED... DUH!!!!

CONFLICT OF INTEREST??? I THINK SO

I've used the real site and never had problems getting my Equifax report. If the website is giving errors, I would take screen shots as evidence that it's not giving it to you. Contact support for the website and see what they say. If no help there, then I'd write a letter to Equifax and include the screen shots. If they still refuse, then I'd file complaint with the FTC.

?? AnnualCreditReport was ordered by the FTC and is run by the 3 CRAs. It takes you to "their own website" one by one and only acts as a portal.

If you are not able to view your report, it is likely because you did not answer an identifying question correctly. Some of them are tricky, but they are there to prove it is actually *you* and not someone else trying to get your info.

Send a request for your free report via postal mail, Certified Mail, Return Receipt requested. Include a copy of your Driver's License & Social Security card. You should get it then no problem.

I've only gotten my free credit reports twice, had no trouble with Experian or TransUnion, but both times Equifax claims they can't find my credit report when I go through the Annual Credit Report web site, but they have no problem finding it when I offer to pay for it on their own web site USING THE EXACT SAME INFO I supplied on the Annual Credit Report web site. What a scam ! So once again I'm confronted with jumping through hoops to get my report from them for free, or paying for it on Equifax's web site. Last time I paid, this time I'm really really pissed and I'm going to pursue a solution. Maybe it's time for me to contact my newspaper ...

I'm glad to see (lack of a better word, here..) that I'm not the only one who is having trouble getting ALL 3 reports. Several times, with me (as well), the site will say 'I already received my CR VIA mail'..which I know I din't. Can anyone tell me..is there any one of the 3 CR's that are used MOST frequent?

I just attempted to get my free credit report from Equifax online and went through all of the necessary bs. I did not get a darn thing, other than additional frustration.

9/27/09 - yea, same as the 8-25 post. Equifax error when using annualcreditreport.com but the other two agencies did not have a problem. I'm sure a court would find them in violation of the law/contract for not "reasonably fixing their website in time" to provide a free report online. Forcing the use of snail mail seems like an internet revenue loss. Since i cant see my own info, others may not either. Thats bad if you are trying to get credit but good if a thief is trying to scam you.

I've not been able to even use this site for over a year and a half. When I type in or use the links on the ftc.gov site, all I get is the following message and have found no number that I can call to ask them about the technical problem.

"A condition exists that prevents us from being able to accept your request at this time.
Please visit this website again at a later time, or to request delivery of your free annual credit report via U.S. mail, call (877) 322???8228.
Thank you.

I am a programmer and this is an utter disgrace. Banks allow us to access information in secure manner but we can not get a report with being baited into paying $7.95. A FREE report should FREE and nothing else. Event some of the links from the FTC site do not work.

File a Complainthttps://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en

This will only change if some lawyers file a lawsuit against the Government and these Credit Agencies. They don't care that peoples lives are altered because of these agencies.

Its a scam. They don't want to give out free reports. Make you run around in circles sending it by mail. They know lots of people will give up and just pay up. I wish I could strangle one of these financial types. Thank goodness they have new legislation on overdraft fees now. That was my last experience with large organizations that can hold the little guy for ransom.

Every year equifax places an account on my report that the other 2 agencies don't and I have to purchase a report from them to clear it up. The account they put on my report never has an account number or anything else to identify the owner of that account appearing on my credit creport. They have also been leaving messages on my phone asking for me to update my credit card payment information with them which I ignore. I believe this latest error on my report is an attempt by them to force me to buy their credit report.

If you sent it certified return receipt and can prove that they received it and when, if they didn't comply with the request (and you were eligible to get your report for free - meaning you hadn't done it already within the 12 previous months)... you don't need to be involved in a class action.

Read the Fair Credit Reporting Act. You have claims against Equifax that you can pursue in U.S. District Court. Take them to task and punish them for breaking the law. I would. If you win, you not only get damages outlined in the Fair Credit Reporting Act, but I think they pay your attorney fees and the costs of the action (i.e. the $350 it costs to file the complaint).

I too have had problems with equifax, I am a had my identity stolen so I am eligible for a free report. I filled out all the questions and asked for the free report, they kept refusing me, I finally thought that I was near the finish line when, I got a message stating that they were not processing on line orders at this time and to call such and such number, bla bla blah. Well the number is a run around, no one answers and none of the lines pertain to my situation. Buy another report is what it boils down to. Someone is renting using my name and SS number I am not sending a copy of my ID and SS in the mail. One one of the other companies the information is all incorrect so I can not answer the questions if someone else took out a mortgage with a company that I do not recognize. I did not have a mortgage with any of the companies that they provided. How do you get that straightened out? I put a fraud alert on my account, I thought that I was entitled to a free report. I wrote a report to FTC about the identity theft but I still have no reply. Who holds these credit companies accountable?

I happened to check my online bank statement tonight, and much to my surprise I notice a $7.95 monthly charge coming from Equifax. I ask my wife (she's the one who access the online statements all the time), and sure enough, she goes " yeah, I was also wondering what this charge was all about " Duh! Big mistake on our part as customers. I don't check my statements often enough, and she doesn't tell me a suspicious charge she notices.

After inquiring with the toll free Equifax number, and Indian Cust. Rep. tells me that I started being charged this amount in Dec 2008, the time when I asked online for my "supposedly" "free online credit report".

I quite distinctingly remember not ordering any product or offer from them. This service supposedly monitors your credit report for "identity theft" and when people check out your credit report. The very same institution which supposedly is there to oversight and "protect" you from online theft, ARE THE FIRST ONES IN SCAMMING YOU WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE INTO CHARGES YOU DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THEY SIGNED YOU UP FOR!!!!! Talk about illogical actions and completely un-ethical corporate behaviour.

After getting in touch with a supervisor in India (I could understand only 10% of what he was saying, and after constant "please say again requests" they tell me that they can cancel the "product" now and the most they can offer is a TWO month refund. Talk about powerlessness on the account of customers and impotence to fight this corporate crooks.

Anybody else with this experience? I'll follow up to the fullest extent this issue not with barely-English-speaking-Hindus in India, but with Equifax corporate office here in GA. If this doesn't work, I'll work with my State Attorney and the Better Business Bureau.

Anyone has other suggestions about how to fight this kind of disgusting Equifax business highway robbery? It's so unethical I feel like throwing up.
They are supposed to protect you from online fraud, and they're THE VERY FIRST ONES IN LINE TO SCAM YOU OUT OF YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY.

Please make comments and send suggestions about how to fight this crooks. Only by joining voices we can fight these corporate giants which pray on the customers they're supposed to "protect" and provide a simple, uncomplicated free credit report as they announce. For most of us, trying to get one ends up proving to be a nightmare.

Thanks to all!

Besides the FTC, I'm going to try my State's Attorney Office and the BBB. My bank also offered a dispute of unauthorized charges Equifax has been hitting me for two entire years without my knowledge or authorization.

Anybody else with more consumer protection agency recomendations? Is this something that your local state or federal representatives might be interested in taking up?

Suggestions Anyone?

Equifax (freecreditreport.com) and their credit reporting tracking is a scam, I used their pay service and disputed bad data watch my score per their paid site go up. request home loan from Chase and Equifax reported a 146 point lower score to them.

When I call Equifax (freecreditreport.com) to inquire they say it wasnt thier problem talk to Chase.

Thanks for sharing your experience regarding freecreditreport.com. Guess what??? I was about to use it in order to check out my credit scores. However, after reading your experience, I decided not to go for it.

You can get a free credit report annually from annualcreditreport.com. As far as I know you'll receive correct credit score reporting from there. This will help you know where you stand in terms of credit and whether or not you can get a loan.

So unbelievably irritated with Equifax today. I got my credit report just fine but tried to order the score for the $7.95 offer. The website timed out and when you try to get back into it, the offer isn't there anymore. Called customer service today and got the major runaround -- basically she told me that I could pay her $15.95 to get it. I told her I wanted the $7.95 that I was offered on the website and she told me to go back to the website to get it. I explained that it wasn't there -- repeat this conversation about 4 times and me finally getting frustrated. Essentially the end of the conversation was: "so you're telling me that no one at Equifax can help me?" "no" "Well thanks for your no help *click*". Honestly, I NEVER get this frustrated when dealing with customer service -- I realize it's just $7 bucks, but *$&#*#, the offer was there. Their frickin' website didn't work, so how is that my problem?? *grrr* I sent them a note that I wanted to talk to a customer service manager. Also went through the customer contact form on annualcreditreport.com and they don't have any phone numbers. Tried to explain in there webform and it failed to submit (go figure). Sent another one that basically said call me and that worked. I'm betting I'll never hear from anyone...
