I am trying to repair some credit. I currently have a Discover Card that I am paying down and am in good standing. I have a Chase Card that was recently closed by Chase. I am paying down that balance and it is almost paid off. I just opened up a Household credit card (1 month ago), because I thought that I needed to open another one to repair credit. I have not charged anything, but it is open. Do I keep this card and use it monthly or do I close it ($39 annual fee) and just use the Discover for now??? Also, how does Chase closing the account affect my credit and is it not as bad as a charge off or the same?

What are your limits on the cards? As long as you are using the card and staying under the limit then you will build your credit score. Keeping the card will not be negative as long as you take care of it. However if you decide to close the card, you will still be able to build your credit score with the Discover Card.

Since your Chase card was charged off, keep in mind that will be on your credit report until it is paid and even beyond that -- I've seen it there between 5-9 years (depends on the severity).

In terms of your Household card, I would get rid of it. Once you have that negative Chase account on your credit reports, it's not going to do you any good. If you have to make credit card purchases, your best bet is to use your debit card.

Once you know that you have a credit card, the bad side of your conscience will tell you to spend, spend and spend. Before you know it, you'll be back in the same boat.

Get rid of the Household card because paying an annual fee is nonsense. I would contact Chase and ask them if they will change your status to "closed at the consumer's request" after you've paid them in full - OR just to account closed, paid in full. That will look much better on your report.
