burns - have you pulled a copy of your current credit report and taken a look at it? It may not be as bad as you think. Go to https://www.annualcreditreport.com/ to obtain a free copy of your report from all three reporting bureaus, and review it. Start looking at the possibilities to improve your credit. If you have some small bills that can be paid off with one paycheck, start tackling those and work your way up. If you have only larger debts that you can't easily pay off, then you may want to look into debt consolidation or settlement, which would help you get them paid off so you can start improving your credit again.

Mornginstar has a good point - If you are upfront about your situation then it looks much better for you. I have terrible credit, but was still hired for a job that ran my credit. I just explained to them how I got into my debt situation, and they understood. Most people are human, and understand that sometimes things happen.
Another option could be to look at positions in smaller companies. Occasionally you may find one that doesn't pull your credit.
