The credit score does not improve until and unless the negative item gets removed from your credit report. Now, paying off the debt does not mean that the negative mark will get removed from your report. Negative items whether paid or not, stays in your credit report for seven years and six months from the date of your last payment towards the debt and affect your score. Now, if you do not pay back a debt, there is a possibility that the creditor might sue you to the court and bring judgment against you. So to avoid the judgment, it is always better that you pay back the debt.
