More companies than you think! the good news is it won't hurt your score to check your own credit so long as you check it yourself and don't go through a third party (like having a mortgage broker friend pull your credit with their account-- that will show up as a third party pull). There are very broad categories of permissible purposes for companies to pull your credit. I'm sure you can find more info about it online. If you think someone pulled your credit improperly, the Fair Credit Reporting Act protects you. Find a lawyer in your area to discuss this with by going to the website of the non-profit National Association of Consumer Advocates, www.naca.net. Or post a more detailed question and I can give you more info.
