Debt collection on old tele debt

I checked my credit report to find out that a collection company is trying to collect on an old Sprint long distance bill, not sure if even mine or not. It is past the statue of limitations in my state of CA, however, I would like to find out how to have this removed from my credit report. Any suggestions? Would you recommend disputing it with the credit bureau first to see what outcome is and then if not successful in the credit bureau removing, then to contact the collection company to negotiate that they remove from my report if I pay in full?

Hi help27
Dispute it with the CRA as well as with the creditor. Ohhhhhhh and never even consider of paying off a debt that is past SOL. I have heard that paying off a debt that is past SOL reopens the debt, thus bringing forth the possibility of being sued. This is an old tactic implemented by most of the CAs to collect on old debts that have long past the SOL period. So be very careful.
Regarding the removal of the item from your credit report, I would suggest that disputing it would be your best bet.
