Credit Report Information

I found an older credit report of mine from 2003. (boy did it look good back then). I compared that credit report with one that I pulled the other day, (the latest one is not so good because I had to default on 4 credit cards) and I noticed that the account number for one of the OC is completely different now than it was before on the older credit report.
There have been 8 or 9 different CA to purchase the debt as of todays date. I researched all of the several different CA collection letters that I received for this account and I think I found where and when the number got changed. It changed on a letter I recieved from Asset Management Prof. LLC dated 5/07. (They were the 7th CA assigned to the debt). They say they purchased the debt from a company called Worldwide Asset Purchasing, LLC. (This company never sent me a dc letter) There have been 2 other CA since then that are using the changed number.
Did Asset Management change the original account number for the OC on my credit report? Can they do that?
