I am getting married in September, and my fiancee and I are looking into purchasing a house. While her credit is good, I think mine is terrible. What will happen to her credit score after we are married? How will my poor credit affect her, and how does this affect the part that I play in getting a home loan?

Your credit scores will not affect her credit report. Here's the thing, with today's guidelines, the lower middle score of the 2 credit reports is what gets used. So this will affect your ability to purchase a house.

The other thing you can do is purchase the home only under her credit. You can only use her income to qualify if that's the route you go. But it is an option. You just might need to purchase a lessor house than you were initialy expecting.

New guidelines state that you have to have a min 620 score to purchase a house and you must have 3.5% down payment.

Have you checked your credit lately?

Alright, I found my credit report, and I found my score. I have about $14k in assorted debt, and a credit score of 513. Ugh. Am I pretty screwed? I believe that only half of that is actually credit card debt, and the rest is mostly a $7k debt to the government for a military signing bonus that I was supposed to give back.

Is this debt that'd be worth consolidating, and would that benefit me at all? Would this help my credit score?
