I've brought my student loans current, and I've paid off my credit card and the negative items (late payments) have dropped off after 7 years. Now though there are 5 collection accounts listed. 3 of these I have settled, 2 are currently being paid down. These are all 3 years old or so. I feel like there's nothing more I can do. At the same time I'd like to get on with my life...Ie get a car loan and a good apartment. What can I do ...has anyone been in similar situations?

how much do you still owe to collections? How much cash on hand do you have, and how quickly can you pay off what you owe? No one is going to lend you anything if you still have outstanding collections, even if you are working on paying them off. Many won't even lend you anything if you show old paid collections ... times have really changed!

Of the 3 you have settled and paid, when how long ago did you pay them? You might have to dispute with the credit reports if it's been longer than a month. Some of them only report once a month, and update their information then. It can also take a few months for your efforts to reflect in your credit scoring.

I don't think a financial advisor would be telling you anything different (at least a good one) other than what you are doing.

I only a few hundred more total in collections. I had heard though that balances and collection totals are irrelevent in figuring your score, just the presence of them hurts it.

The balances on my report seem accurate, the 3 paid off ones reflect zero balance. But they are still on there.

does this mean i'm pretty much stuck for a few more years and cant get anything?

I wouldn't do anything. Time will take care of it on its own. Just don't get any more collection accounts and take care of the credit u do have and it will slowly get better.
