I have a 2002 CA state tax lien that I just paid off in June. I am pretty sure it was released which I can see from the recorder of deeds web site).
It had not been reflected in my credit report though as I was told this ususally takes a few months. I am planning to write a "goodwill" letter to the Big 3s and ask them to remove it from my report. I understand that might be a long shot as it could stay on for another 7 years since I just paid it.
My questions are:
1. Other than the GW letter, what else do i need to attach to the letter?
2. Who exactly should I send the letter to at the credit agencies? addresses or fax no.
I am trying to buy a house and this would be a huge help if I can pull it off.
Thanks a million!

The bureaus are only a medium for other entities to report credit accounts and other records; they report information that "data furnishers" provide to them. They really do not have authority to - and as a matter of policy they won't - make "goodwill" adjustments to your credit report. The bureaus will only act to comply with the FCRA.

It is ultimately up to the "data furnisher" (or whatever entity is reporting the information) to 1) ensure that the data being reported is accurate, and 2) make adjustments or delete the item from your credit report.

Now in your case, the 7-year reporting period starts from the date of occurence, not the date paid. So if your tax lien is from 2002, then it should come off this year, depending which month the tax lien was filed. If it has been 7 years, then you can dispute that item with the credit bureaus as being past the 7-year reporting period and they should remove it per FCRA.

If it has not been 7 years yet, then your "good will" letter should go to whover is reporting the info (ie the State Dept of Revenue) -- for it will be up to them to decide if they want to remove it "early".

Thanks, guys. This seems encouraging...... I will give it a shot.

I am a little confused about who has the authority to remove the record on my credit report though. The lien was filed on June 2002 so it has definitely passed 7 year mark.

However when I paid off the lien and contacted the county office, they told me they can only remove the lien but will not notify the credit agencies as they are the ones who can remove the record.

So maybe I should obtain a copy of release lien from the county and fax to the credit agencies and told me it has passed 7 years and been released and no need for a GW letter at all?
