Creditor closed my account without informing me - Is it legal?

I had taken out a credit card 15 years ago. I stopped using the card after few years. Last month, my son turned 18 and I thought of making him an authorized user of the card. However, on checking with the card company, I found that the account has been closed. Is it possible? I was not informed about it.
